Kids, everyone has their own logic about food.
If not, weβd all just be eating everything.
This is my logic about fruits β plus their secret βscientificβ categories.
So, these are my criteria:
Effort: How many steps do I need to take before Iβm able to eat it? If it is more than two steps, I will probably only eat it if your mommy prepares it.
Taste: How good does it taste? Would I enjoy revisiting that flavor repeatedly?
Price: What is the cost?
Healthiness: Can I eat as much as I want without my body feeling funny?
Cleanliness: How clean are your hands after?
π True Berries
(Soft flesh, many seeds, no pit)
- Banana β Probably one of the best GMO fruits on the list. You can just peel them like a monkey and wah-la. You can eat them. Your hands are still clean after.
- Blueberries β Wash and eat. I like thin-skinned ones. I donβt really enjoy bursting the skin of the thicker ones. And, I like the big ones!
- Grapes β It depends on my mood; I donβt like bursting the skin on them sometimes.
- Tomato β Beautiful to eat after slicing and adding a bit of olive oil and salt.
- Kiwi β Thereβs a skin, and it depends on your skill to gently scoop it out.
- Papaya β You have to cut the peel and core and scoop the seeds out.
- Dragon Fruit β Pretty easy to peel. Taste is decent. (A berry from a cactus flower β how cool is that?)
π Hesperidiums (Citrus Fruits)
(Thick rind, juicy segments)
- Oranges β Peeling is still a tad hard.
- Mandarin β Easy to peel.
- Sumo orange β It costs $2 per one now. Crazy. But it tastes so good, and it peels so beautifully.
- Grapefruit β Bad for my meds. And, I donβt love the sourness.
- Lemon / Lime β Wonderful for cooking. Horrible for eating. Unless it is to see if babies would like it. Iβm sorry, Daddy would think itβs funny.
π Drupes (Stone Fruits)
(Fleshy fruit with one big pit)
- Cherries β Wash and eat. But it has a pit. I didnβt like them as a child, but now they can be addictive.
- Mangos β Most familiar and inviting taste.
- Peaches β Need to be cut. Depending on the type, it can be harder.
- Nectarine β Similar to peaches, but with smooth skin.
- Plum β Sweet and juicy, but watch for the pit.
- Lychee β Decently easy to peel. In Chinese medicine, itβs βheaty.β We donβt want you guys getting nosebleeds, so you canβt eat too much.
- Longan β Decently easy to peel too, and has a shiny black seed like an eyeball inside.
- Dates β Sticky sweet, like caramel from nature.
- Avocado β It can go on so many things. If ripe, the flesh can be scooped out pretty easily.
- Coconut β This is a bank vault. Everything is like a bank heist. Once you get in, there is wonderful, delicious goodness waiting.
π Pomes
(Have a core full of seeds)
- Apple β Too much effort to take the core out. And, it is too hard for my grandpa teeth.
- Pear β You have to core it. And, most of them are too hard for my teeth.
π Aggregate Fruits
(One flower makes many tiny fruits clumped together)
- Blackberry β Wash and eat. They feel a bit pricey, though. Depending on the season, it can be $4β5.
- Strawberry β Just wash them and plop it into your mouth and eat (yum).
π Multiple Fruits
(Many flowers fused together)
- Pineapple β Needs to be cut. Lots of cutting.
- Fig β Easy to wash and eat. You have to pull it open in the middle and be careful. Sometimes there can be worms. Is the goodness worth potential scariness? Your mommy says βyes.β
π Pepos
(Hard outside, soft inside)
- Honeydew Melon β I donβt love their sweetness. This may be the fruit I dislike the most.
- Watermelon β Oh why is this glorious fruit hidden by a hard layer?
π₯ Capsules
(Split open when ripe)
- Durian β Hard to crack open. The custardy taste is awesome. Friends and family think it smells like trash.
π« Not Fruits
- Sugarcane β Pressed for a wonderful sweet juiceβ¦ but itβs actually a stem, not a fruit!
